Midsummer things

Midsummer things

Last weekend was midsummer, and sun doesn't set here until 1st of July. When you go more north you have to wait next night until 28th of July, so they still have one month to go before having night. Our business goes around reindeer and silage now.

Last weekend was first reindeer markings for this summer. Satu got few calves on mark and feels summer. Especially when you have stress about weather. Summer is running early here and we should be already doing silage for wintertime as hay/grass has been growing well.

And then come weather part. I would need always 2 rainless day to do field. First cut hay, then let it rest and dry over night and next day bale and wrap. Someone has decided that let's give some rain every day on this summer. Southern Europe has enormous heat wave, hot and dry, if I have understood right. Here in north we have rain and around 15 celsius, if sun then +20 celsius.

Every fucking day some showers. I did maintenance for machine earlier this week (late as usual) and always some showers. I had to do between yet now it is done and ready for work, except rain always in wrong time.

On Thursday I looked forecast, when next rain would be. One said it starts on Friday at 14.00 and other that 15.00. It would be close call to get bales ready before 14.00 as I couldn't do cut until after 20.00 on Thursday evening as there would be rainshower ending around 19.00 and grass has to stand some after rain so water would drop off. Well at least that's my tactic.

So when they called for marking I said I will come as there wouldn't be silage making. How wrong I was? On Thursday evening rain never came and now all forecasts says that rain starts after 6pm on Friday. There would be plenty of time to do one field or there was... it is too late now as Friday is already running.

Next chance is to cut Saturday evening, and I might cut multiple fields with risk as forecast says it won't rain until Monday evening next time. I would have two full days to bale and wrap. This is life when only one man, one tractor and three machines.

Fishing is still good, I haven't been guiding or fishing as my time has been around machines. We have German couple in Nook (our accommodation), they came last Saturday and will be one more week. I showed few spots to them to fish as that's why they came. I offered guiding yet they haven't booked yet. I have got photos from them, some ok graylings (they think big) and some nice pikes with fly (those were nice).

Rain has kept water levels high and good and temperature is also still pretty low. So at least if silage making won't work, fish will be happy.

And if weather won't let me do silage I think I'll go fishing, yet not today as it is filled with some other obligations. You could say marriage ones, more or less.

Have a nice weekend and go fishing
