I first met Roger in the mid/late 1990s when I switched over to using his guide wrap finish Flex Coat. For the non-rod building contingent here, Flex Coat has been the standard in the industry for guide wrap finishes since the late 1970s. Flex Coat products are used by most major domestic rod factories, as well as by thousands of custom rod builders worldwide. It wasn't until I interviewed Roger that the real depth of his influence in the fishing tackle business came to light. In addition to the Flex Coat line of products, Roger also owns several patents in the tackle and outdoors industry. His company has produced several instruction books, and over the years he has helped an untold amount of people start small businesses building rods....many of which have gone on to become very sizable production facilities.
I have had the pleasure of spending time with Roger on several occasions, as his facility is not but an hour's drive from my home here in Texas. And although we've been competitors in the guide wrap finish business, first with my old brand ThreadMaster, and now with the new Generation 4 line of products, Roger has never let that get in the way of a good working relationship. In fact, years ago, he used to joke with me when we would run into each other and say "We have to keep that money in TEXAS Andy!"
At one point back in 2007, I had devoloped a unique process for making carbon fiber grips, and was considering obtaining a patent on the process. Roger was the only person I knew who had been through the process, so I gave him a call for some advice. Even though we were competitors at the time, Roger really helped me through that decision making process, and I will always be thankful for his generosity despite the fact we were competing against one another in the rod building market place.
When I sold my first company in 2008, I was having a conversation with one of Roger's employees, and was telling him how much respect I had for Roger as a business man, and how I always appreciated the way he handled our business relationship/friendship. His employee responded "Roger has a lot of respect for you too, and there's nobody happier about the success you've achieved than him.
For those unfamiliar with Roger Seiders' history in this business, I'll have Paul post the interview tomorrow.
Hope you're all having a great week!
