Backstabber

Backstabber

Happy New Year everyone. Sorry we're a bit late today, the festivities have had an impact. As my first fish of 2026 will likely be a carp, I'll make the first fly a carp fly too. And it's one of the best: Jay Zinmmerman's Backstabber.

There are loads of very similar patterns that have turned up since. But, I've never found one that's better at what it does. It's full of life and movement at rest, offers a nice silhouette that the fish can easily see without being too bulky or threatening. Most importantly it just looks like food, generic, non specific food. So almost regardless of where you're fishing and the main forage species it can be pressed into service. All you have to do is switch the colour, size and heaviness of the dressing. The fly in the POD is tied  with a long sparsish wing of the sadly discontinued mottlebou to match the Japanese long-arm shrimp that are very prevalent round here.

Hook: Gammakatsu SL45 size 6
Weight: Bead chain or dumbbells - the original is brass Dazzle eyes, but choose to suit the waters your fishing.
Thread: 140 den to match wing colour
Body: Rough, flash blend dubbing
Wing: Marabou-the original is a couple of bloods, but you can use a heavy pinch from an extra select
Hackle: Brama hen or similar

The only change I make to the original dressing is the hook. I'm not a fan of the black Gamma bonefish hook because I've found that it can be brittle and the straight eye doesn't do anything useful with the leader drag. I prefer a stronger down eye carp hook like a Gardner mugger, or for smaller flies the Fulling mill grab gape special. The down eye means you can weight them more lightly for the very skinny water and the drag of the leader and wing will still force the fly to flip hook point up.
