Lesson learned - I'm an idiot!

Lesson learned - I'm an idiot!

The Easter break is upon us when hoards of people drive from their suburbia houses to cramped campgrounds to live in each other's pockets and lives for four days to "get away from it all". All this is accomplished after enduring hours and hours of travel in a traffic jam to reach a destination that usually only takes two hours.

I was one of them just recently except I took off early on the Tuesday before the official holiday commenced on Good Friday.

I was told by my aunt and uncle I could not take my fly rods due to the cramped conditions and the hundreds of children and dogs that would be around (not overly exaggerated believe it or not). Right then I should have known better and pulled out and gone to a few local spots like Bribie Island, Mooloolaba for day trips here and there.

We were staying in a small town called Imbil at a campground that is on the bank of a creek that exists from the overflow of Burrumba Dam - a largish lake North West of Brisbane.  Nice place (if it wasn't for all the people over Easter.)

As requested, I did not take any fishing gear and it was the most bloody frustrating time of my life.  One morning I heard a splash so loud I thought a kid had jumped into the water off a cliff but it turned out to be a fish!! And the number of large rises and fish I saw jumping out of the water just made me more and more peeved and twitchy and very frustrated.  And I saw my first Saratoga (large bugger) cruising the waters right in front of me......  and there was nothing I could throw at it, apart from joining a few of the kids and throwing stones at it (little shits)!!!!!

Anyway, I packed up and came home today because a) I didn't have any fishing gear, b) because of constant heavy, nonstop rain (I don't mind rain but only if I'm fishing) and c) a torrential downpour that threatened to flood the creek and wash me and my little, severely leaking tent downstream.

So, lesson learned - I'm an idiot but one who will never, ever, go away without fishing gear in my car again.

Aside - I have vowed to return to Imbil, this time armed and prepared. No photos of this trip however, unless you want to see six people looking drowned and miserable, huddled under a shade cloth......

Next week - a story about tuna, a heavy rod and possibly, a fall overboard....!!!
