Imagine that "Mid-age", white fat man sitting naked on highest bench in sauna, temperature is 176 F, which is 80 celsius about.... and he is thinking that Nymphing is like masturbation. And more he thinks more convince he is right about this fact. Any argument you make for nymphing sits excatly for masturbation.
How we end up on this situation.? If you have now sauna image burnt on brains, I'm sorry that your imagination did that to do. Everyone has their cross to carry, mine is that once I called to my captain about something and his first sentence was, yeah I'm in shower naked and I saw that you called so I took the call. That was way too much information, and now image that this short captain is naked speaking on phone next to shower is burned on my personal computer.... impossible to remove.
So I chatted with my guests who I was planned to guide on Thursday. I asked about gears and he told that nymphing set and rod 5 with floating line, he hasn't touch rod 5 set up since he bought nymphing set up as he got so much more fish. I am who I am and I told him straight to way that nymhing is mastubation, less effort for result.
We joke about little and then agreed schedule for Thursday. I went sauna and started to think this nymphing thing again, just to end up more convinced that it is like that.
Thursday, light rain now and then, I meet my guest and drive to parking spot. He put nymphing set ready and take rod 5 just in case. He asks how I would start and I say with dry fly. He looks amazed, dry fly in rain, yes if that doesn't work then something else, last option nymphing.
He has took nymphing class with other company earlier, I know them and they are absolutely great on nymphing, they use to compete. On his second his third cast he got first fish. He asks if it is too easy, I tell that's how it is with nymphing easy catch.
We fish different spots, in one place he says that he would have never been fishing that spot with nymphing. I suprised and ask why, he tells that countercurrent etc. He got 7-10 fish from that spot, I answered that this would be first spot for me to start fishing. Day continues, few fish several spots and only 1/3 from rapid, he catch a lot of fish, not big ones yet some decent now and then also, graylings mostly yet some small trout also.
One of my favourite spots I try to get him to change on dry flies and rod 5, hatching starting despite light rain and some rises all ready. He won't switch as catching fish with nymph all the time.
He is fixing his gears and rod ends up to me, I make one cast to try casting with that rod, fish on... this was last thing I wanted to happen, I give rod back to him and he takes fish up. He is laughing will you now get set for nymphing, nope it is too easy to catch.
Casting with nymph set up requires different skill and to be accurate other one, and also how to fish, still it is masturbation. You can try to change my mind yet I'm pretty sure that any argument you give fits perfectly for masturbation.
So I will keep nymphing as my last option when fishing. Does it make me better than guy who do nymphing.... no, it just shows that I'm not only fat white "mid age" man but also really stubborn.
