One of my students recently recommended the “With Winning In Mind” podcasts. I’ve been enjoying them so much I’ve ordered the book! Not just for me in fact, but also and primarily for my coaching.
I had an excellent discussion some years ago with Phil Blackmar on this same subject, which I’m including today if you haven’t listened to it yet.
It really is a very interesting topic. It doesn’t just relate to flycasting competition either, but also to pressure shots as well as instructor exams. We have the well-known “Tarpon Fever” and of course it’s something I see regularly while guiding for Giant Snakehead.
I find something that helps me with shot taking is to detach myself from the outcome. Whether or not the fish actually eats the fly is unimportant to me. What does matter to me is whether or not the shot goes in. That’s what gets my complete focus of attention. It’s all about putting the fly right on the money.
Anyway I’m slowly working my way through these excellent podcasts. There are some outstanding coaching nuggets that appear from time to time as well. Very enjoyable.
