Last time

Mika Lappalainen - Friday, November 6, 2026

Temperatures are dropping and we had snowing again just to be gone mostly two days later. Lakes are slowly getting ice. I will have look today how it looks on ours. I haven't got time to get some whitefish for wintertime yet and might be it is too late.

This week's fly is about as easy as they come, and it'll serve you for fresh and saltwater whether it's flats carp, smallies or spooky bones. It's the Bunny Crab!

Dialling in my shots

Paul Arden - Wednesday, November 4, 2026

The lake here has risen and there are snakehead babies around with their parents. The adults that spawn at this time of year are generally smaller adults. Why this would be I don’t know, but the usual size is around 2.5KG. It’s certainly possible to find bigger adults (6-8KG) but this would be extremely unusual. There are however more sets of babies to be found, so I’ve always seen this as one of the prime times of year. You can still get 10-shot days which is as good as it gets nowadays.

Still Standing

Graeme Christie - Tuesday, November 3, 2026

No fishing again this week, so here is another no fishing one. Auckland, North Island, early November. The harbour temp is still climbing and I am still at the desk. The wind has been relentless this week. I ran a half marathon this weekend. Fast enough. Finished, which was the point. Getting to the start line took many weeks. A muscle injury that was quite problematic, a rehabilitation, slow kilometres while the leg decided whether it was going to hold. It held. Fitness came back the way it always does, by doing the dull thing again on the days you don't feel like it. There is no trick.

Tiang

Paul Arden - Monday, November 2, 2026

Just out from Sungai Tiang. Considering the amount of rain that’s fallen recently it was surprisingly clear. We had a group fishing from Ipoh. They only fished the lower sections. I fished one afternoon rainy spell with a dry and a nymph combination. Many fish looked at the dry…. As in MANY!! But only a few ate it and stuck, and a couple more came to the nymph. I’m sure with some tweaking of the dry fly it will be some awesome sport. The challenge is whether to go bigger or smaller. Smaller you hook more fish, bigger you tend to catch the bigger ones. Decisions decisions.

Boo

David Siskind - Sunday, November 1, 2026

I’m still jones-ing for my club sessions and when I spied a long-necked Salta Beer bottle at a gas station convenience store I jumped to buy it. It was a big one - at least the equivalent of a “forty” in the US. They wouldn’t sell it to me. The clerk spoke no English, she couldn’t understand my poor Spanish and I couldn't understand hers. It turned out that I couldn’t take the bottle out of the store. I’m still confused but it seems that there are a bunch of weird rules about buying a beer and taking it home. I think that they wanted me to drink it on the premises - So no clubs.
